Balanced
Scorecard Corporate Social
Responsibility
Let’s see
Balanced Scorecard Corporate Social Responsibility from different
perspectives. We know, businesses around the world have slowly come
to realize the strategic dimension of environmental management and
corporate social responsibility. However, most financial controllers
still perceive corporate sustainability as a costly constraint. But
is their view valid? In recent years, the business world has seen an
important surge towards corporate environmental and social
management. Many leading corporations have established environmental
management systems and social auditing schemes, or are now in the
process of doing so. Expenditure related to environmental protection
or social responsibility has become a prominent budget
issue.
However, many
companies and organizations still lack systematic tools to manage
and control their sustainability efforts, but for those Balanced
Scorecard Corporate Social Responsibility is the answer. But here
comes the most difficult (and sometimes remains notoriously
difficult to answer): "Does it pay to be green and ethical?" After a
decade in which business has rather freely invested in environmental
management systems and social reporting, senior environment and
ethics officers face increasing demands to justify exactly how the
magic of eco-efficiency and social responsibility shows up in the
bottom line. Sustainability activities must become more relevant to
the top management.
Frankly
speaking the last decade the Balanced Scorecard has emerged as a
magic tool that is supposed to solve all existing management
problems so far. This ideas flickers in your mind when reading
Kaplan/Norton, the inventors of the Balanced Scorecard and reading
through companies’ stories of success. So why should it not be the
same magic for Balanced Scorecard Corporate Social Responsibility,
which is yearning a long time for tools and methods to bridge the
gap between bright commitments of the Senior Management and Social
Responsibility in companies all day operations? HR and other
personnel are taking much help from using Balanced Scorecards, and
we are seeing more and more companies around the world are inclined
towards implementing Balanced Scorecard in their business
operations.
For example, in
a new Corporate Social Responsibility Europe/E&P report in
association with Ashridge, entitled "Exploring Business Dynamics -
mainstreaming CSR in a company's strategy, management and systems",
industry leaders like Danone, BP, Johnson & Johnson Europe and
STMicroelectronics argue that Corporate Social Responsibility can
offer a primary competitive advantage in determining the success and
sustainability of any business and that it is not just something
that companies are doing to appear
altruistic.
In the report,
companies that have distinguished themselves as frontrunners in
Corporate Social Responsibility explain how they have managed to
translate the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility into a
daily business reality, using tools such as integrated management
performance systems, the balanced scorecard, and new forms of staff
training and recruitment. Companies such as Shell, BP and Novo
Nordisk show how they have managed to combine Corporate Social
Responsibility issues with a strong performance culture by making
non-financial goals up to one third of their performance appraisals
and reward structures. Balanced Scorecard Corporate Social
Responsibility are gaining popularity in many such
organizations.
